Home made mod podge

I have never used store bought mod podge, i refuse to pay the ridiculous amount they charge here in Australia, i just make it myself. A staple item in my craft inventory is PVA glue, i use it for gluing, as an ingredient in texture paste and gesso, and to make mod podge.
PVA glue, for those of you in America is white glue, or ‘school glue’.
I buy my PVA glue at bunnings, 4 litres of Parfix PVA wood glue for $17.80, and parfix happens to be my favourite brand of glue. Buying this glue is cheaper and better quality than the glue at the cheap shops, i just decant it into smaller bottles for use and i have peace of mind that i won’t run out.

So my recipe for mod podge is:
1 cup of glue and 1/3 cup of water… thats it! Just put it in a jar and shake it up.

The beauty of making it yourself, besides the awesome monetary savings, is that you can alter your recipe. Wanting to glue heavier objects? Add more glue. Want to seal some paper? Add more water. Simple.

So mod podge has variations and you can do this yourself:
To make it glittery, just add superfine glitter
To make it matte, spray with a coat of hairspray once dry
For use on furniture or anything outdoors, coat with a varnish when finished

So now you have your mod podge, what can you use it for?
Decoupage, paiper mache, scrapbooking, the possibilities are endless, just look on pinterest.
A great use i recently found out about is for fabric. To stiffen fabric and stop the edges fraying when you cut it, just soak it in your mod podge and leave it to dry, you will be left with a more paper like fabric that is awesome in crafts.

So enjoy your diy mod podge and happy easter!

Awesome!!! Thanks so much for the tip! I’ve been making placemats and have been through about 4 pots of mod podge! The larger size, so an expensive exercise!
